-
How do injectable weight loss medications work? These medications work by mimicking a hormone called GLP-1. This medication tells the brain that you are full after eating and controls how quickly food moves through the gut, making you feel full sooner and longer. These medications also work to enhance the production of insulin which regulates blood sugar levels. Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) also has a bonus component, GIP, which increases your body's sensitivity to insulin.
-
What are injectable weight loss medications?Injectable weight loss medications including semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are medications that are injected into the skin that can assist with weight loss.
-
How much weight can I lose on injectable medications? In a clinical trial completed on the medications, those who used tirzepatide at max dose lost an average of 22.5% of their body weight. In a different trial, those on semaglutide lost an average of 13.7%.
-
What are the side effects of GLP-1 agonists? The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and appetite suppression. If nausea becomes too intense, we can add on an anti-emetic (nausea medication) to help.
-
What are other adverse reactions?Other uncommon reactions may include pancreatitis, gallbladder and biliary disease, hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions, injection site reactions or infection, kidney disease, thyroid disease and thrombocytopenia.
-
Do I still need to diet and exercise?Yes! It is important to use these medications with continued diet and exercise.
-
Are these medications safe during pregnancy? No. You should discontinue the medication at least two months prior to trying to conceive. If you are on these medications and become pregnant you should discontinue and consult your obstetrician.

Do any medications interact with GLP-1 agonists?Yes. The most common is oral contraceptive pills (birth control). The medications have been shown to make oral birth control pills less effective, so it is important to use a back up barrier method such as condoms while taking this medication. Other medications may interact with GLP-1 agonists. Be sure to list all medications you are taking prior to starting the prescription.
-

-
What is a prior authorization?A prior authorization is a process that is completed with your insurance company to assure you will meet the proper qualifications before they will pay for the prescription. Many insurance companies require this for weight loss medications. Feather does complete (1) prior authorization that is included with the service fee. Additional prior authorizations are $20.
-
What are my options if my insurance declines to cover the medication? If your insurance does not offer coverage, or declines to cover your medications you can: 1) Pay out of pocket for the medications at your pharmacy 2) Try another weight loss medication 3) File an appeal 4) Use the compound pharmacy
